The two postseason competitions are high-level national meets. Arizona will be well-represented in Washington and Oregon

Logan StanleyArizona Republic

While the official Arizona Interscholastic Association track and field season is over, athletes are still competing as a large collection of local prep runners, jumpers and throwers get ready to head west to compete at two national-level postseason meets: the Brooks PR Invitational in Renton, Washington and Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon.

Brooks PR is at Renton Memorial Stadium outside of Seattle on June 12. Nike Outdoor Nationals is being held from June 12 to June 15 at Hayward Field, which was just the host of the NCAA Track and Field Championships and will be the site of the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials.

There are athletes across the spectrum who will be competing at Brooks PR and Nike Outdoor Nationals. From Mesa Red Mountain’s and Arizona 800-meter state record holder Tyler Mathews, whose season has been set up to peak for this time of the year, to incoming Gilbert Highland freshman Brandon Delancey, who is running some impressive times for an eighth grader, the state’s present and future will be on display in Oregon and Washington.

At Brooks PR, there will be a rematch of the AIA State Championships in the 100-meter hurdles as Phoenix North Canyon sophom*ore Rebekah-Jhade Garrett and Chandler Hamilton senior Kori Martin both are entered. Garrett beat Martin, who set the state record (13.32 seconds) in the event earlier in the season, at the state meet. And this past weekend, Garrett ran a jaw-dropping 13.28 at the Great Southwest Classic in New Mexico. The race was wind-aided at 2.7 meters per second so it won't count as an official state record, but it's the fastest all-conditions time in state history.

The largest Arizona presence at Nike Outdoor Nationals will be made up of Desert Vista athletes running with the Ahwatukee Running Club. A total of 17 athletes are making the trip.

Here is a list of all the athletes competing at the two meets.
